What a K Rend system is
K Rend is a manufacturer of through-coloured silicone render systems. A K Rend job is not one product spread on a wall: it is a specified build-up of base coat, alkali-resistant mesh, primer and topcoat, with named beads and details, all designed to work together.
The topcoat is silicone-based, so it repels water and stays cleaner than painted render, and the colour runs through the material so there is no repainting cycle. Finishes include scraped textures in fine and standard grains and a dash-receiver option for a traditional dry-dash look.
We install it as a K Rend approved installer. That matters because system performance depends on using the specified components in the specified sequence, not on mixing products from different ranges because they were on the shelf.
Who it is for and when it is specified
It suits new build and extension blockwork, modern cavity-wall houses, sound existing render being upgraded, stripped pebbledash elevations, and external wall insulation build-ups that need a durable decorative finish.
Homeowners generally come to it for the look and the maintenance: a uniform contemporary elevation in a colour like anthracite, light grey or off-white, with no repainting. Specifiers come to it because the system is documented and its components are designed as a set.
On pre-1919 solid walls that need to breathe freely, a lime-based render is usually the correct specification instead, and we will say so.
What happens if it is left
The cost of leaving it another winter
A thin-coat system installed off-specification fails in visible ways. Mesh that is not fully embedded gives cracking along the lap lines. Missing or wrongly placed beads give ragged arrises and water tracking behind the render at openings and at the base. Topcoat applied in the wrong conditions or without maintaining a wet edge gives banding and patchy colour that no amount of cleaning will fix.
Those faults are not cosmetic for long. Every crack and every badly terminated edge is a water route into the base coat, and once water is behind a thin-coat system the failure spreads and the repair means cutting the area out and rebuilding it.
The other cost is the guarantee. Manufacturer-specified systems assume the specification is followed. Substituting components, skipping the primer or applying in unsuitable weather is exactly where people find out that a cheap quote had a reason.
Common mistakes we are called in to undo
- Mixing components from different manufacturers' ranges and calling the result a K Rend system.
- Applying the topcoat over an unprimed or unevenly suctioned base coat, which produces patchy colour.
- Applying render onto hollow or cracked existing render rather than removing it back to sound substrate.
- Leaving out the base bell bead and ground clearance, so the bottom of the wall wicks moisture permanently.

Step 1
Inspection
We assess the substrate, tap-test existing render, check ground clearance, openings, verges and penetrations, and confirm whether a K Rend system is the right answer for the wall.
Step 2
System specification
We select the correct base coat, mesh, primer, topcoat grain and colour and the bead schedule, then issue a written fixed price with a payment schedule across the project.
Step 3
Preparation and beads
Access is arranged by us. Failed material is removed, the substrate made good, everything masked and protected, and corner, stop, movement and bell beads set plumb and level.
Step 4
Base coat, mesh, primer, topcoat
Base coat applied with mesh fully embedded and lapped, cured, primed, then the through-coloured topcoat applied and scraped wall by wall keeping a wet edge, so the texture and colour stay even.
Step 5
Verification and guarantee
We check every bead, reveal and termination, clean down and walk the elevation with you. Completed work carries our 10-year workmanship guarantee, alongside £2 million public liability insurance.

K Rend render systems: materials, methods and where it applies
The build-up in detail
A typical silicone thin-coat build-up runs: substrate preparation, base coat, alkali-resistant glass-fibre mesh lapped and fully embedded within the base coat, cure, primer to regulate suction and colour, then the silicone topcoat scraped to grain. Each layer has a defined role, and skipping one moves the failure point somewhere else.
Bead schedules are part of the specification, not an optional extra: corner beads, stop beads at openings and verges, movement beads where the structure requires them and bell or drip beads to throw water clear at the base of the wall.
Finishes, grains and colour
Scraped textures are available in finer and standard grains; the finer grain reads more contemporary and the coarser is more forgiving across large elevations. Dash-receiver options exist where a traditional dry-dash aesthetic is wanted with modern performance behind it.
Colour choice is wide, with the grey and anthracite family dominating current work across London and Kent. We will look at the colour against the elevation, the roof and the neighbouring properties rather than choosing it from a swatch in isolation.

Substrates and applications
Suitable substrates include blockwork, brickwork, sound existing render and insulation board as part of an external wall insulation build-up. Unsuitable ones are anything hollow, friable, moving or permanently damp, those get resolved first or the system goes on over a problem.
New build and extensions are the cleanest applications because the substrate is known. Refurbishment work needs more preparation: strip-out, making good and sometimes a levelling coat before the system build-up begins.
Residential and commercial
On houses the normal scope is the whole property so the colour and texture read as one, with the programme planned around drying times between coats. On commercial units, schools and managed blocks, the same system is delivered with agreed working hours, access planning and phasing.

How long does a K Rend installation take?
It is a multi-day programme because the base coat must cure before priming and the topcoat, and weather affects application. The programme is confirmed in writing with your quote.
Are you a K Rend approved installer?

Does K Rend need painting or maintenance?
No repainting, the colour runs through the topcoat. Occasional gentle cleaning of sheltered areas that rain does not reach is the practical maintenance.
How long does a silicone render system last?
It is a long-life finish designed to hold colour and water repellence for many years. Life depends on correct installation, exposure, detailing and working rainwater goods.
Can K Rend go over existing render or pebbledash?
Over sound existing render, yes, after preparation. Pebbledash is usually removed first, see our pebbledash removal and re-rendering service, because the surface profile and its condition rarely suit a thin-coat system directly.
Will it crack?
Correctly embedded mesh and properly placed movement beads are what control cracking. Structural movement in the building itself is a separate issue, and we will identify it before quoting rather than render over it.

Is it suitable for a period solid-wall property?
Usually not. A solid wall built in lime needs a breathable specification, and we will recommend lime instead where that is the right answer.
